20th Anniversary Jazz Fest Logo Featured on WFMZ

04.01.2010

Channel 69 WFMZ, a local TV news station, was a sponsor of the 20th Annual VF Outlet Berks Jazz Fest, which wrapped up March 28, 2010. Its on-air coverage included the concerts and happenings throughout the weeklong event, but one story really hit the right note for The Anderson Group.

Mike Anderson, General Partner at The Anderson Group, designed this year’s 20th anniversary merchandise logo, and WFMZ featured Mike and his long history with the Jazz Fest, including his musical contributions, on the evening news.

Mike actually created the event’s familiar neon-style logo, which has been used consistently since the festival began in 1991. He was also involved in coordination, preparation and typographical direction of many of the other merchandise graphics used over the years.

Anderson stated, “Twenty years is an important milestone in the festival’s history. The Anderson Group has been a part of the marketing and branding efforts in one way or another since day one, and we felt strongly about contributing this year’s signature graphic.”

Reminiscent of the functional, simple geometric design and sans serif typography of the Bauhaus movement of the early 20th century, this year’s logo has an even deeper symbolism. Anderson explains, “The first major concert back in 1991 featured world-famous trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, an impressive way to kick off the festival. He’s back this year to help celebrate our twentieth anniversary. The 2010 festival will also include other notable trumpet players who have performed here over the years, including Rick Braun, Chris Botti and Randy Brecker. Because of this, I wanted to include a highly stylized trumpet in some way.”

An exhibit of all the Berks Jazz Fest logos (1991-2010) can be viewed in the brick-lined hallway that connects the restaurants Judy’s on Cherry and The Speckled Hen, both located at 4th & Cherry Streets in downtown Reading, PA. The Anderson Group also created the logo for The Speckled Hen.
